Julie and I got out and voted early - the polls in NJ opened at 6 am and we were there around 6:30, just because we wanted to get it out of the way...there was a steady flow of people, but our polling place was not yet swamped.

Plus.... the guy's name is right there on the ballot for president. That has to be a bit staggering on some level. The guy just lost his grandmother too. She didn't see the end of this.

Holy crap. You have to bring in a cheat sheet before you vote.
****************
Actually, many people do exactly that!
There actually are a large number of polling places in most states. In the county where I live, there are 150 polling locations.
One problem with opening more locations is finding enough people to staff them. In many areas, it's hard to find enough people to work the polls -- just about anyone with a regular job or children to take care of wouldn't be able to do it.

We have a number of state and county referendums on this ballot...it took me forever just to figure out what they all meant, let alone how to vote on them...the fact that Obama got through that mess alone in 5-10 minutes is impressive!

In Canada, it is mostly retired people manning the polling booths.

I voted early, like two weeks ago on a Saturday. It was busy, but it was quick and painless.

Got to my polling place on the west side of Indianapolis at about 6:40 this morning (polls in Indiana opened at 6:00 am), left the polling place at about 8:10. Quite a turnout -- more people than I've ever seen at my polling place this early, even bigger turnout than during this year's primary. To give you some idea of the turnout, my polling place was serving four precincts, and when I inserted my ballot into the machine, it registered me as the 108th ballot of the morning for that machine (there was one machine for each precinct) -- it looked like one of the other precincts had a higher turnout, but one of the others was much more sparse. Crowd seemed upbeat and courteous.
Gonna be interesting watching the returns roll in tonight.

Yep. That's exactly what I did. It me less than 5 minutes to actually vote because I read up on all the various amendments and county issues ahead of time and wrote down how I wanted to vote on each issue (remember, vote NO on amendment 2 in Florida!).
That way I didn't have to spend time trying to read and comprehend the wording of each one in the booth.

My only post in this thread.
I voted. Line was not bad. About half the people (registered voters to be precise)in Jacksonville FL early vote. I always get a "voters high" after depositing my ballot. Crossing my fingers for no hanging chad issues in our state this year. Recent elections have been smooth but with a historic turn-out it should be interesting.

I'm predicting that early balloting will turn out to be the "hanging chad" issue of this election.

Heard a news report this morning of some district reporting that there was a malfunction in their machine that resulted in each vote for McCain being registered as votes for Obama and vice versa.
