There will be midterms but they will be contested and/or overturned where needed.

Just seeing on tv that at least two foreign press have been hit by rubber bullets whilst interveiwing members of the public. The British reporter was black, am wondering if that's why he was targetted? He was wearing a pretty obvious "Press" jacket and obviously had a cameraman with him.

Yes, Bill Collins, I saw one where an Australian reporter was hit in the leg with a rubber bullet and you can clearly see the shooter aim for her and shoot. There was no crowd, no mass confusion. Just a deliberate shot.

You know, when I lived in Istanbul, Erdogan (a dictator in all but name) met even peaceful demonstrations with fully armed and armoured riot squads and tanks with water cannons. I'm experiencing a bit of deja vu, listening to news out of the US.

As noted before, Trumf has made it clear he wants to be an absolute dictator and, potentially worse, a nuclear president. Watching the real America die…..

Prior to his reelection, I had been expecting the "military deployment against the citizenry" thing, since Trump had very clearly wanted to do so in his previous term. What I hadn't been expecting was the assault on the science and medical infrastructure. Both big news stories yesterday were terrible and renewed confirmation that we are in an autocracy (albeit the earliest stages of such), but RFK removing the entire CDC vaccine advisory panel feels way worse.

Trump views the nuclear arsenal with his usual toxic mix of prideful ignorance and a totally misremembered American Golden Age of his youth. A man who thinks you can stop a hurricane with an atomic bomb, thinks himself smarter than any expert, thinks all of his enemies can be terrified into submission, and who clearly bought into the rah-rah nuclear propaganda* that suffused his childhood is about as dangerous a red-button finger possessor as you can get.
*America's nuclear arsenal is such a powerful deterrent than no-one on Earth will dare get out of line, but it's safe enough that you can emerge unscathed from an attack by hiding under your school desk.

Trump just threatened protestors who dare protest his authoritarian military parade on Saturday.
So much for "Free Speech!"

I guess we are going to see him go full authoritarian earlier than maybe he planned. So we might see a greater backlash before election time, which might give people more time to accept what he is.
