In that vein, are we really nearing America's 250th birthday?!
I mean, I was a kid and the Civil War was a century ago!
What happened?!!

When we arrived at the centennial of the First World War in 2014, I declared that could not be. Surly a war that was 100 years ago was the American Civil War!!!

I still remember when Bugs Bunny mentioned that the Civil War ended almost 90 years ago.

WW2 ended five years before I was born, but my British relatives all talked about it constantly. Much of what they said entered my brain as false memory, and it took me years to grasp that, no, I had not experienced the Blitz first hand. The fact that I walked to and from school past vacant lots that were bombsites didn’t exactly clarify things.

Yeah, you can make your head spin with these kind of temporal comparisons. Covid started 6 years ago. When I was born, the first moon landing was 6 years ago!

My paternal great-uncle fought in the Great War. And my own grandfather was only a couple of years too young. Whew!

I remember watching Bruno Kirby in CITY SLICKERS and DONNIE BRASCO, and then soon after that, being shocked to see him in GODFATHER II looking very much the same. Nowadays, it's not too surprising to see some actors today still looking very much how they looked in movies and shows from the mid-2000s. It's about a 20 year difference either way. But during the 90's, 20 years encompassed almost my entire lifetime at that point, so it felt much different.

Live Aid was forty years ago (!), a day that is still so fresh in my memory.
Time to face it, troops. We're old.

VINNY VALENTI: "I still remember when Bugs Bunny mentioned that the Civil War ended almost 90 years ago."
That's when Bugs Bunny dressed up as Abraham Lincoln and said to Yosemite Sam: "Here's my card - look me up at my Gettysburg Address!!"

Another weird time marker is to do it with classic albums/singles.
The year of Carole King's "Tapestry", James Taylor's "Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon", Joni Mitchell's "Blue", and hell I'll even throw in Barbra Streisand's "Stoney End", was 55 years ago.

My paternal great-uncle fought in the Great War. And my own grandfather was only a couple of years too young. Whew!••• My maternal grandfather was a prisoner of war in WW1. He told of having been deafened by shellfire, and how German surgeons restored his hearing. He never had a bad word to say about his captors. (One grumble:his name, my mother’s maiden name, was Hulme. The Germans insisted on calling him Hull-May.) Cut ahead a few years, and one of our family friends had been a bombadier in the Luftwaffe. He had the misfortune of being shot down over Russia, and spending almost six years in a Soviet prison camp. His experience was very different from my grandfather’s.
