I was a fan. I used to buy X-Factor each month (even though overall the series was never all that good) and the art was never better than in the first 7 issues. He drew beautiful versions of the original X-Men. I also admired his work on the Flash and the New Mutants.

63 is a young age to die at. What a shame.

He seemed a nice guy, I was following him in Instagram where he was sharing many of his comic book memories and insights of the industry. Always he spoke with the best words for the artists and took the time to responded to the comments.

Is there a story as to why he started going by
Butch instead of Jackson?

Also interested in this, it kinda confused me at the time.

Enjoyed his work a lot, underrated artist.

RIP

He'd been living near Cincinnati recently, a little south of me. We chatted here and there online, I reached out to him after touring the Billy Ireland Art Museum in Columbus, which has a truly historic collection of original comic strip art. Butch mentioned that he's meant to go but hadn't gotten around to it, as is often the case for all of us. It's a little touch of sadness to understand he never went and got to see so much of that art he loved in real life.

I think i discovered him on The X-Men And The Micronautes. Loved him on Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D (written by DG Chichester)  and on Aliens vs Predator: The Deadliest Of The Species with Chris Claremont.

Great pics Stephane! His short run on Nick Fury had a great Steranko vibe.

He also drew a great Terminator mini for Dark Horse. And had a cool run on Iron Man in the mid 2000s.

What an amazing career. Working with some many celebrated writers and iconic characters.

Yes! That slipped my mind. Really enjoyed that. There was an excellent standalone issue where he fought an alien on a Stark International space station in orbit.

Another library burns to the ground. Like many I loved his Doctor Strange.
He had a unique line that reminded me of Michael Golden but with his own
twist. Know nothing of his later work as with few exceptions I stopped
buying new comics after the early 90s but I was a big fan of the period I
read.

Peter - yeah Butch drew about 15 issues during the second Michelinie/Layton run.

And he also drew another run Iron Man run written by Daniel Knauf (TV writer) around the Quesada Civil war era when Tony Stark was in charge of SHIELD. A very cool techno espionage arc.

Deep cut I also liked his ETERNAL WARRIOR issues from Valiant in the 90s. I mean I like everything Butch drew..!
