(Quoting)Byrne: Well, I'd like it to be remembered fondly. About the only thing that's bothered me since I've left is some of the references to "Cockrums back" that gave the impression that there was Cockrum's issues and then there were three years of fill-ins and then Cockrum again. *** Ah! This makes sense. A variant on Red Sweater Syndrome.

After all, wouldn't want anyone to misconstrue a straight forward answer. *** The amusing thing about that is watching the intellectual gymnastics to which fanboys will subject themselves when someone says something truly scurrilious, but they don't want to accept it. Then it becomes "he didn't say what he said when he said what he didn't say!"

You didn't just say what I think you just said, did you? Say it isn't so!

Paty Cockrum has mentioned something about you resenting Dave coming back to the book.

Well, it's pretty obvious from JB's comments that he wants to destroy Cockrum and everything he holds dear...

Is Paty Cockrum the mysterious "Paty" who penciled AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #264 (a fill-in which introduced a lame character named Red 9)? It bothered me for years that there was no last name in the credits box.
I kind of liked the artwork in that issue, by the way. It was flat, but interesting in a quirky way. That issue was also the first time I ever saw Spider-Man curse, and I about fell out of my chair when it happened. (He asked Red 9 something like, "Why the hell are you picking on me?")

But I can usually figure out the source of the drivel, be it inversion, out-of-context quoting, or some other internet excess. But, as noted, since I have never said a word against Dave or his work, this one puzzled me. There did not even seem to be something to be twisted, out there.

Frank,
Over the last four years I've been reading Amazing Spider-Man from the beginning (Amazing Fantasy 15) with the goal of going all the way to 400 (or so). I'm up to issue 351 currently. So far the issue you mentioned above stands out to me for two reasons. 1. I consider it the WORST issue of the entire series....art, story, characters....everything about it. Terrible issue. And 2. I also noticed the debut of Spider-Man "cursing" which was really jarring especially since I had been reading all these years worth of Spider-Man comics in such a condensed time frame. I wish it never happened.
Also, according to comicbookdb.com, Paty Cockrum is responsible for the art on that particular issue.

Pardon my ignorance but just what is the Red sweater syndrome?
Is it to be blamed on teen Clark Kent/Superboy?
