I think you should have the first meeting with Superman issue, drawn and
written by JB. It's possibly in some Superman-man of Steel papperback. It
starts out in an antiques store and then an artifact is opened up and a future
town appears and grows up from the ground.

That's the ACTION story i mentioned up top, Lars.

Not hugely educated with the character, I like JBs run. I also have liked the first two parts of the Simonson/Steelfreeze The Demon&Catwoman story in Wednesday Comics.

I've enjoyed the Alan Grant Demon stories. There was an element of humor in this version which added a certain charm to this comic when other comics were becoming darker and darker. It was a fun book (remember Harry as a pillow, the wars in Hell, and Wonder Woman). Lightness, from a demon from Hell!
I believe Garth Ennis took the book over after Alan Grant, but I haven't read those.
And yes, rhyming ALL of the time certainly grates on you after a while.

The Garth Ennis books were great if you like dark comedy, but horrible if you actually want to read stories about the Jason Blood/Demon character. There were a few good character moments out of a multi-year run, but most of it was made up of, for example, Demon teaming up with Haunted Tank to kill lots of demons.
One thing he did do, of note to this thread, is return to the original status quo, where Jason Blood discovered that he wasn't a 'real person' and didn't have a soul, that he was really just Etrigan's human form. He also discovered that those 'ancestors' of his were pretty nasty people, which makes sense, since he was a demon in human form.

Michael Golden did a fantastic version of the Demon fighting Man-Bat in Detective Comics..forget the issue number though...It was right after Marshall Rogers run on the book.

IIRC, Neil Gaiman addressed the rhyming in an issue of Sandman. The more powerful demons of hell are the rhymers, so as a demon "works his way up" he begins to speak in rhyme full time. I think Lucifer even mentions Etrigan as an example.

There's a 1987 mini series with some really nice art by Matt Wagner that's worth picking up, you could likely get it very cheap. ____________________
I only have a couple of those issues. Haven't read them in ages, though.

Lightness, from a demon from Hell!•• If you see humor in a man being turned into essentially a quadruple amputee, you must have a very strange notion of "fun". Of course, that was what so many of the Brit writers gave -- and continue to give -- us, wasn't it? Strange for the sake of strange. Don't look for logic, common sense or even tangible plot threads. As long as it's straaaaange it will be enough!

I think it was 481 (or thereabouts)? Or was it one of the last issues of Batman Family?
Strange for the sake of strange.
Morrison's Doom Patrol would be a good example of that...
