 QUOTE:
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster complied with the request. *sigh*

What a cunt.

I hate South Carolina. Not the only state where I've witnessed racists shouting the n-word out of their cars, but the most recent. For a while my family lived in Aiken, birthplace of rapist and segregationist Strom Thurman, where there's a small museum celebrating his sweet marriage at age 66 to a then 22 year old Miss South Carolina; among the exhibits is a massive photo of him walking his future bride to her first day of elementary school. Locals love the story about the little princess who tamed that ol' rascal Strom.

It's not all bad. James Brown did community service for one of his felonies in Aiken, and he was legendary for his instinctive ability to size up and estimate mobile home rehab repairs at a glance.

Don't hold back, David. :)

My buddy was born in Aiken, though raised all over, from Charlotte to Detroit to New York. Most of his family was Southern, not easy being Jewish down in Dixie 100 years ago. His great-uncle was lynched. Jesus!

This morning I looked up “aortic dissection”. A particularly nasty way to go, it seems.

Horrible. Eight years ago my father calls me, says my mother's feeling like she has a knife in her back, my mother grabs the phone, dismisses the concern, says she's going to have a cup of tea and lie down. Ten minutes later, my father calls back and says, "your mother's dead." Lucky to be not far from the hospital, ambulance speeds her there, I arrive, doctor says: go in that room, say 'goodbye' to her. 1-2-3, like that. Lying on a bed, nearly green of skin for lack of circulation. Yet, almost impossibly, she was stabilized just enough to be rushed to the top cardio-thoracic surgeon on Long Island, who even more almost impossibly saved her life. She doesn't remember anything after the tea, but it's like your chest explodes. Yow.

Holy cow, Michael!!!

Graham did not look as though he made many healthy choices in his life, and he noticeably gained weight a while back.  Aortic dissections have many causes, but hardened arteries and high blood pressure are two of them (I looked it up as well).

I've lost over 100 pounds in the past few years, and my blood pressure went from a scary 173/118 in 2023 (a doctor friend's reaction?  "You're gonna die!!!") to 118/77 on June 2nd.

People, get your blood pressure checked.

One of the more depressing aspects of attending conventions was seeing grotesquely obese individuals lumbering around hauling longboxes of comics and sweating profusely.

One such guy I used to see often would joke that he didn’t worry about having a heart attack—tho he was a carrier!

He was dead not long after.

My mother, not just a victim of genetics but born into intense global depression poverty, suffering starvation, bombings, war, imprisonment, imminent death, etc., she's battled high BP forever.

But anybody older than 50 should be able to say "I have a cardiologist."

My cardiologist told me I am in great shape for the shape I’m in.
