I was about to say Stan Lee must be turning in his grave, but then I remembered he moved to Los Angeles for his later career. Jack Kirby too!

That is actually kind of a great comparison - a retiree packing it up and moving out West is a tale as old as time.

Is it? I thought the stereotype was that people retire to Florida, and people go west for adventure and fortune.
I see more people leaving Los Angeles to retire - it can get really expensive out here!

As a New Yorker, this saddens me. I think this move is partly being done for "tail wagging the dog" synergy reasons.

I haven't read any new Marvel comics in years, but this still comes as a bit of a shock.

Somebody wrote, the company that Jack built finally followed him out to California.I definitely hear what many are saying about feeling sad (especially creators like JB that spent significant time at Marvel). It is an end of an era. Spidey trading in his long pants for board shorts, next?
From a corporate standpoint it makes sense and that's what Disney is all about, of course.

A former Forum member had a son who interned at Marvel and then briefly worked there so I went to the office with them once. I couldn't say there was much a of tour to be had as it was a very tiny space for the workers, I believe the executive offices were either up a set of stairs or down the hall. I didn't really get introduced to anyone either so I can't say who I may have met. I couldn't even tell you where in the city they were located at that point, but it was 2009 - 2010. I know, I am very low on specifics.
But yeah, as has been said many times here, it wasn't some mythical Bullpen. Still was nice to see it.

I remember taking a detour on my way home from work just so I could pass the office at 387 Park Avenue South. Pretty unassuming building, tho.
It's sad, though I'm surprised that it took Disney 14 years to make this move . DC already moved over a decade ago. Agreed - Marvel IS NYC. It's a key reason why I aleays preferred them over DC - I just couldn't get into imaginary cities.

Since I started with DC (National Periodicals), specifically Superman, my introduction to the superhero genre was through imaginary cities. Metropolis, Gotham, Central, Star, Gateway, Midway, etc. Part of the fun was guessing which real cities they were avatars of. When I started reading Marvel regularly (after occasional exposure to coverless copies at the barber shop) it was a surprise to find the stories set in New York, a city I had actually visited! (Historical Note: The FF started in Central City and Spider-Man in an unnamed urban area near a rocket base! Both migrated quickly to New York—without explanation.)

Edward Aycock - You missed the real Marvel. They went through several progressively larger offices while I was there. My last, 387 Park Avenue South, was on two floors and quite spacious. With a real bullpen.

My dad worked in Manhattan most of his work life. In the 80s he worked in midtown at an electronics shop and he had a customer that he serviced and helped him pick out a portable radio for this customer's niece. The customer was very grateful. It turned out to be Michael Hobson, VP of Marvel Publishing. My day told him he had a son that collected comics. Mr. Hobson sent me over 50 titles in the mail with a letter. I unfortunately don't have the letter but I still have some of the comics. This was around early 1988. I got everything that was on sale dated April.

Mike Hobson was a great guy, in my experience.
