For most of my adult life I was an advocate for capital punishment. It was the economic considerations that changed my mind.

Something the general public does not think about when a murderer is given a life sentence is the prison system having to care for these inmates in their senior years. There are inmates who were horrifying killers back in the 80s who now have diabetes, incontinence, dementia, etc.

Capital punishment and the ineluctable flaws in the criminal justice system are not easy to reconcile.
Since 1973, 202 exonerations: 109 of those were Black defendants.

I think there's something about capital punishment that satisfies our sense of justice. Some people really don't deserve to live, or at least that how our brains rationalize punishment. However, intellectually, we know the system is very flawed and that alternatives are both cheaper and fairer. but it's hard to get past that emotion, especially knowing the horrible crimes that are committed and wanting someone punished.
Interestingly, Ohio's Republican governor has recently come out against the death penalty. I agree with him.

Decades ago, I read an interview with an American Judge who said in most murder cases he would neither execute nor incarcerate. Murder usually being a crime of passion, he reasoned the defendant was not likely to be a repeat offender. Not sure how that would play out in today’s America.

There have been some truly horrific murders in the U.K.
recently and there was no doubt the perpetrator did it. I
am in two minds as to wether the death penalty would be
apt. There's the cost saving and the prevention of them
killing again, but i am against killing for the sake of
killing. The trouble with British justice is that often a
life sentence doesn't mean life, it may be 15 years, and
they will eligible for release maybe earlier than that,
leaving the risk of re-offending.
