As JB said earlier, artists could always count on pages 2-3 being available for a double page splash. When Jack Kirby made the move to DC, he started doing double splashes on every page 2-3, and he kept this tactic when he returned to Marvel. His DC double splashes were often massive battles on an epic scale for the Fourth World wars, but the example below is from The Demon #1.

Mike Grell did a 2-page spread every issue of THE WARLORD, and I love those to this day. Sure, it's only "one panel," but, boy, did it set the mood for everything that came after!

The second issue was corrected, but very bad color for Gabriel. Subsequent issues seemed much better. A check on the first three issues, gives Stan Goldberg (not directly credited) as colorist and so probably a printer's "correction" on the first issue and a separator's error on the second issue.

If the printers/separators were paying that much attention I would be much impressed!!

Todd McFarlane also did page 2-3 splashes as a regular feature once he started writing his own books.
