Arc, I used VectorMagic.com, which I bought as a desktop app (it's also available as a web site... the desktop program is not inexpensive though... I tried to use it for work, but so far didn't come up with anything). I then overlayed two vectorizations -- a more detailed one and a simpler one -- in Corel PhotoPaint. I then removed some background manually and (sometimes selectively) adjusted contrast and colors. I gotta say I love the original image by John P. much more though, it has more soul... still, I enjoy playing around with it :)
