Looking up something else, I was very surprised to see that in CHARLTON BULLSEYE #4&5 (1976), John Byrne WROTE and drew two 11-page chapters of DOOMSDAY+1! First, I had no idea there were extra chapters of that beloved old series I have every issue of! Second, aside from co-plotting X-MEN, I thought JB's first solo writing was FANTASTIC FOUR #232!
Am I missing any other early (or surprising) professional, published JB writing?

JB was writer/artist for Space:1999 #6, also back in '76.

If you're looking for any examples pre-FF #232, JB also wrote two earlier issues of FANTASTIC FOUR, #'s 220 & 221.

And of course MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE #50, which was JB's first full writing gig at Marvel.

Ah yes, I blanked on those FF and MTIO issues, but that SPACE: 1999 issue is a surprise!

I see that JB wrote as well as drew his stories for WHEELIE AND THE CHOPPER BUNCH #2 & 3! I'd like to see them! Seriously, there must be some publisher out there who could pull these obscure early assignments together for some retrospective publication--maybe even a magazine at TwoMorrows? (Likewise, I'd like to see Neal Adams' ARCHIE stories and early gems by other great artists.)
Going through the credits of WHEELIE, SPACE:1999, and other Charlton comics of the period, I see other familiar names like Joe Staton, Tom Sutton, and (I'm surprised!) Mike Zeck! I never really thought of these as JB's contemporaries, but I guess they all did come up around the same time.

I don't believe that JB wrote the WHEELIE stories. Since they were licensed kids properties, they didn't really bother with credits on the page so it's harder to tell.

I don’t recall writing any published WHEELIE stories.

You didn’t remember drawing that Avengers commission, either.

I got that info from the Grand Comics Database, which is usually pretty accurate. However, they DO have to update info every so often, so they're not infallible.

I had plotted a Wheelie story — “Star Cars”, about cars from outer space. But I left the book before I got to do it.
