Our house has two floors and a basement. There is a full bath plus a half bath on the 2nd floor, but nothing downstairs. When we first moved in, we discussed putting a powder room on the first floor, but didn't want to deal with the reality of renovations.
All that said, we have to go upstairs to use the bathroom. That's good motivation at my age -- thanks to my failing prostate, my knees getting plenty of work!

In my previous residence, with all its staircases, I joked that it was not possible to go from any point in the house to any other point without having to go UP stairs. Here, with 5,000sqft essentially on one level I maintain that if you need something, anything, no matter what, it will be at the other end of the house.

My mother has 90 in sight, but she's still going up and down the stairs, basement to first floor, first floor to second floor, every day, all the time. My father died in his 90s, but in his final years he announced, "I'm not going upstairs anymore," even though he could do it, slow and steady, and it had a rapidly deleterious effect upon him -- coupled significantly with his subsequent decision not to walk around much at all. Hmph.
So, when my wife sometimes says we could move to a one-level home, or even just move downstairs to the extension in our current home, full bed and bath, etc., I am resistant.

I admit that I have thought more than once about getting one of those stair chairs. Heck, if nothing else, they kinda look like fun!

My dad did a renovation to their house last year that brought all the laundry and shower from the basement to the main living level because my mom was having such a time going up and down the stairs. They’ll both be 78 next month.

My great-uncle had a stair lift chair -- I was only allowed to ride it after he died back in 1970. Yeah, my father thought about that too, but not until he was about 89.

I've put a lot of stock in exercise/ functional movement. I used to be a real gym rat, but now only work out at the gym twice a week. I'm still a bike commuter, but also ride for fun several times a week. I also practice Animal Flow, a quadrupedal movement system that I love and recommend to anyone reading this -- it's not a cult!
No matter, I can still recognize that my body has changed metabolically. My energy levels, my motivation, sixty is not twenty, no matter how you slice it.

I was just looking over your contract and it seems you checked "self-aware" rather than "abject denial" on the aging page. You can log on and check, but I'm not sure what edits you can make a this time.

I barely felt a difference physically from 30 to 50. Ever since then, decline! And now 70 is something I can see all too clearly.

Recent studies suggest there are two points at which the aging process kicks into a higher gear, our forties and our seventies. I can testify to this!!
