I love the shading and how you have posed the character.

I love the shading and how you have posed the character.

Thanks, I'm always trying to improve on my anatomy and shading and was pretty happy with how this one came out.  I can never figure out, imagining I was doing a superhero book, if it's a better path to go with generic, "fake" lighting or go with realistic lighting.

With superheroes I tend to think that a more generic approach is better in general.  Something I always struggle with is trying to make drawing look as realistic as possible while not trying to make it look like a traced photograph.

I realize this particular drawing could never be mistaken for photo-realistic but that's a continual conversation I have with myself.  Why am I struggling to make a drawing as realistic and anatomically correct as possible when the goal isn't for me to produce a drawing that looks like a photo?

In this particular case, I take more pride in the finished result because it's all out of my head.  Another mystery that I have no idea why it's such a source of pride but I'm always much more pleased with something like this that I haven't used any reference to produce.  As far as the pose, I intentionally didn't want it to be too symmetrical(both arms up or both arms down, perfectly straight on--there's an every so slight twist/tilt to his shoulders) but admit it's just a grimacing and flexing for no reason shot that is an exercise in drawing muscles.

I wound up feeling that it had a Steranko feel to it.

I don't recall you posting your superhero stuff on here but I found a link on another site that had a bunch of the pages from those hero's and it was a fun read.
