The two-issue miniseries by Claremont and Paul Smith — were you asked to
be involved in that in any way? In lieu of any Byrne, Smith sure isn’t a bad
second pick, but I’ve long wondered if you had been asked to contribute at
all.

Marvel editorial kept pushing for an X-Alpha book, but the wounds were still too fresh for me. I didn’t want to work with Chris.

But I cogitated upon the problem and came up with a solution: someone else would plot the thing, I would pencil it, and Chris would script. This was agreed to, with two additional small requests. First that Kitty not appear (I was still smarting from how Chris handled her), and…. Dang it! I can’t remember what the other thing was.

Anyway, all was agreed, and Shooter appointed himself to write the plot, along with Denny O’Neil and Ann Nocenti. I sat back and waited for the plot to arrive.

Which it did. Obviously written by Chris. It even opened with a standard Chris trope, asking for a specific kind of aircraft without providing reference. Also, Kitty was all over it. And vital to the story!

I called Nocenti an asked what was going on. This completely violated my requests. She said Shooter and Denny and she had roughed up a plot, then given it to Chris to “polish”. In other words, as I said, to turn it into something I didn’t want to read. I said there was no way I could work on the project in this condition.

She called me “unprofessional” and hung up on me.

And that was the last I heard about it.

What a shame. Of course “Shooter appointed himself to write the plot…”
should’ve been enough to warn anyone, I guess.

JB: She called me “unprofessional”…

***

With no trace of irony? Makes me laugh and cry.

They had the million dollar unicorn in their hands, and did something to
screw the metaphor up so bad I can’t even complete it!

Wow, isn’t the “unprofessional” part not sticking to the agreed upon terms to begin with?  As Mark also noted.

Lying to freelancers has been a popular editorial sport since the Dawn of Time.

I'm guessing they all whispered among themselves that JB was unprofessional for having such requests (or just wanting Claremont not to plot the story.) and Shooter being involved was already a red flag.

Don't know much about Ann Nocenti but assuming she's an ally of Claremont in the old X-office.

-C!

So they say “no”. They don’t say “yes” and then double-cross me.

There was one bit that Claremont did that I liked a lot and yet it still got f'ed up somehow. Rogue absorbed Northstar's powers and memories - and thus learned that he was gay (of course it wasn't said outright). He was very pissed about this invasion of his privacy. Ok, good so far.

But in the next issue...Rogue dresses up and asks him for a dance? Way to bark up the wrong tree!

I didn’t see it as a romantic gesture. More of a “we understand each other
better, let’s be friends” kind of thing.

I just read the first issue of the latest Wolverine/Kitty Pryde comic by Chris.
My word! He’s linked her dad to Xavier during the war.

Had I missed that before? I don’t remember them having known each other
back in the 80s.

A full-on X/Alpha JB book would be a real gift, but given how small a volume of work Smith did in his career, I do treasure the book we got for getting just a little more of his work. Story is undeniably goofy (stepping on both JBs stuff and Simonson's Thor world-building at the same time, which is no small feat), but I liked it when I was a tween.

The details have so faded in time that I can't remember if this was tied to the New Mutants in Asgard annual? If not, what the living heck?
