Hmm..I may regret saying this, but I always liked the portrayal of Doctor Doom in the second Spider-Man and Superman team up.
Look I get that Jim Shooter was a problem and hurt a lot of people in his time. But I'm not gonna jump on the bandwagon and criticise one of the few things I thought he did well, just because it's the done thing for some of the members here to criticise everything he ever did. (Almost as if hoping to score brownie points with our host for doing so.)
To me Shooter's take on Doom in both this story and the original Secret Wars, (for all it's other faults) was the strongest the character was ever written outside of JB's definitive work on him. And I thought Doom playing the Diplomatic immunity card is exactly the way he would take advantage of Superman's respect for the law. As Doom has frequently exalted in his ruler of a foreign country role, in many, many of the stories he has appeared in over the years. And I actually really enjoyed Doom not being afraid or intimidated during his first meeting with Superman in the story.
So yeah it's one of my favorite Doom stories. I loved it as a kid, and I still quite enjoy revisiting it from time to time. I will agree though that the Parasite was a poor choice of DC villain. And there are aspects of the Hulk Superman clash that niggle away at me. Plus it's a shame the book doesn't take advantage of the giant size treasury pages in the way the original 1976 story did so well, with it's wonderful full size shots of the characters. So it's by no means perfect.
But then I don't quite feel the original is perfect either. (Though the artwork certainly is.) As I was never all that interested in the 'Mad scientist' Luthor of that era, and very much preferred JB's later take on the character.
So they both have aspects that I like and dislike. And I'll fully admit that I may be a little biased towards the second. As when I was a kid the first time* I ever saw anything where Marvel and DC characters teamed up, was seeing the front cover of that treasury edition advertised in a UK Marvel comic. Though it would not be until a few years later in the mid 80es before I managed to puchase it (And the 1976 story at the same time.) So there is quite a bit of childhood nostagia for me with that cover. As it absolutely blew me away at the time that there was a story existing with those characters together.
(*I suppose I didn't see anything for the first books release as I would have been a toddler at the time!)
