Eric, i found that lot's of eye contact and smiles along
with the hand gestures help, which are visual clues you
probably used unthinking when she could hear along with
plenty of patience. Even old dog's are quick learners and
soon adapt. Case in point...we went on holiday with our
first deaf dog not long after her blind companion died.
On the first day she soon mapped out the floor layout of
the chalet, the next day we had to move into the
adjoining chalet as the boiler broke, it was exactly the
same layout but a mirror image, initially she went up the
corner where the tv was as that's whe the door had been,
but within a couple oh hours she'd got it all worked out.
Adding new hand gestures for certain things will help,
and as i said they learn fast and adapt.

Our Oliver is deathly afraid of the fireworks. This year they started at the
end of June and only just stopped 2 nights ago.

Correction. These assholes are still shooting fireworks this very night.

Good grief! Why would anyone still be doing that? I can see the Washington Monument from my apartment, and they're not even shooting fireworks here any more.

Try living in England, i can guarantee from October to New
Year we will be suffering them on a nightly basis. They say
times are hard, but plenty seem to have money to burn.

I feel your pain Brian. Another bugbear that leads to
fireworks any day of the year... gender reveal parties for
unborn babies. I don't know how we've gone from keeping it
a secret until it's born, or just calmly telling family.
But the extravagant parties and social media aimed displays
nearly always leads to the obnoxiously loud fireworks.
Weddings too seem to have to have them. I'm pretty sure
it's only the last 25 years they've gone from being
visually based to exagerated bangs and screeches.

One of the many major fires in Northern California over the past decade was started by one of those idiotic 'parties'.

I am grateful my Canadian municipality has passed bylaws restricting use of fireworks to only 3 holiday weekends: Victoria Day in May, Canada Day in July, and Diwali which is between mid October and mid November. Sales of fireworks are also banned in some municipalities.
I don’t think any of that would go down well in the freedumb loving’ US!
