Reading Tom Breevort's article: Jim Salicrup confirmed the cover mock up's legitimacy.  'Nuff said! Or is he a liar involved in this grand conspiracy,  junior sleuths?

When Todd Klein, Tom Orzechowski and other letterists spoke I listened. As I wrote earlier, a latter day attempt at an unused version of the cover would've gotten everything correct in regard to covers that were printed, and that this one doesn't seems more likely to say that it is genuine and not something concocted later to deceive.

I was just looking at Star Lord Special Edition #1 and Justice League #200 of the early '80s and they both have creators' credits on the cover.

 QUOTE:

Who is talking about a grand conspiracy, Matt?

When the initial news came out with little detail, some of us here expressed some suspicions that it might be fake. As more information dripped out (increasingly credible), those suspicions faded, particularly when Marc and Brian mentioned in the previous page about Brevoort and Salicrup.

Subsequent to that information, we have a discussion about quirks in the piece that raise some questions. I don't think anyone at any point talked about anyone having conspired with anyone.

Naturally, #137 is an issue in which many here have a keen interest.  Confirmation that the piece is genuine is hardly a case of "Nuff said". On the contrary, a revelation that this heretofore unknown item exists  is naturally a springing board for further questions.

Brevoort surmises that it was either Jim Salicrup or Weezie that made the decision to go with a new version. I, for one, would be interested to hear what their reminscences are regarding this piece.

I agree with Peter. I think it's weird to have this revelation so much later and with so many things looking not entirely like they should be, given the vintage and the rest of the covers of that era.

I am not accusing anyone, and I actually believe it was supposed to be used, but not as a cover. Hence why people remember something they never revealed before. Why bother have JB draw the standard size art for the cover and then use a rectangle of that, cutting some and drawing some more, especially when this never-EVER happened on the title before? Because of the ad? No title I came across during that month did that, even though they all had the SAME problem!

Rebecca, I don't think either of your examples actually apply. JL #200 was over at DC and the Star Lord issue was a) published after X-Men#137 and b) an one-off that practically could pass for what would later be called a graphic novel/prestige format/etc (actually a colored reprint of the original story), celebrating the first time the Claremont/Byrne/Austin/Orzechowski team worked together before X-Men and they added Glynis into the mix as well. It's part of the appeal of the whole thing to demonstrate the creative team.

Salicrup specifically says in the Brevoort blog that it was created as a cover.  That really should be the final word.  I know that initially there was uncertainty about this piece, but at this point we have testimony from two people directly involved in the production.  Holding on to a theory that is not only unsupported by any evidence but also is contradicted by the available evidence strikes me as obdurate, if not arrogant.  Perhaps it does not make sense to you that they chose to design a cover like this, but they did.  Obviously someone agreed it did not look good, because it was not used.

Matt, I'm not sure why you are being such a dick about this. Before Jim
Salicrup confirmed this, Zalme was the only one involved in the issue's
production who said it was real - and he was the guy who sold it through
private channels. There were several reasons to be skeptical. Having Salicrup
not just confirm it was real but also that he wrote the copy is even better
confirmation than getting Shooter, so I am on board that it is real. But before
Salicrup weighed in, it seemed awfully naive to trust one source.
