There’s a new bio on Mark Gruenwald out - review with the expected bias (but still sympathetic) over at The Comics Journal: https://www.tcj.com/reviews/mark-gruenwald/

Would be very interested to hear takes on it if anyone has a chance to buy/read!

Slight tread drift -

You know thats the one good thing about todays streaming world is that public figures get to tell their own life story 1st person. "Arnold" the Arnold Schwarzenegger documentary on Netflix is a good example.

I never know what to make of other documentaries. There is no way to really know what is fact, what is speculation, or worse yet, what is false, sensualized just to spice the story up a bit.

Further thread drift - I am currently reading Grenadiers, the autobiography of Kurt Meyer who was a Waffen (Combat) SS officer in WWII.   Before I bought it, I read an online review that stated this book is really 2 books:  One book is the actual historic account of what happened to him in WWII; the second book is him tap dancing around, avoiding, and outright lying about things that would have convicted him of war crimes.

For any doc, you need to engage your critical thinking. The Beckham documentary was the Beckhams telling their own life story. And they completely glossed over the Rebecca Loos part of the story, somewhat predictably. Having the subject telling their own story is an important source, but you have to be aware they are telling one side of the story and the chances of that being unfavourable to themselves is low.

One of the great straight-to-the-source documentarians is Errol Morris. He produced The Fog of War, a feature length documentary entirely focussed on Robert S McNamara's testimony about his life. Morris was also behind this bit of weirdness: LINK
