Found this online:

————

When a young John Byrne first visited New York to break into the comic book industry, he went to DC Comics and met legendary editor Joe Orlando.

• The Meeting: Orlando famously "dressed down" Byrne for walking into his office with artwork that was drawn at the wrong size.

• The Advice: Before Byrne left, Orlando handed him a Jerry Lewis comic book page and told him, "Here, at least do them the right size".

——-

None of this is true.

The Alberta College of Art (ACA) had hosted a traveling show of comic book art, and I saw there the standard size of the original art (by then, 10x15 inches).

And I didn’t actually meet Joe until years later, when I started working on Superman. He and I became friends after discovering we had the same claw-handed approach to holding our pencil, putting the “artist’s callouse” on our ring rather than middle fingers. This led to us greeting each other down the hall with a single raised finger. A lot of folk at DC misread which finger it was, leading to an assumption Joe and I “hated” each other.

When I spoke at his memorial, I told this story. There was a widespread “Oh-hhhh!” thru the audience. I closed with the appropriate upraised finger.

And, finally, tho it was policy at DC to hand out artwork, it was before my time. I have no JERRY LEWIS art in my collection.

Where does this stuff even *come* from? Like, who was this
person's source? I can't even imagine the game of
telephone that happens to get there.

Never heard this one. Just when we think we’ve heard all the stories about
JB’s breaking in to comics, this comes out of nowhere. How does stuff like
this even get started? And why now?

More and more people have decided that spreading harmful disinformation for clicks is okay.

Somebody really screwed this up.

Interview with Tom Batiuk:

After you graduated from Kent State University in 1969, you initially wanted to work for Marvel or DC Comics?
Exactly. I was a big comic-book fan. I loved that stuff. I liked the newspaper strips. Obviously, I loved Charles Schulz, but I wanted to work for comics. So yeah, my first summer out I went to New York and visited DC first. Joe Orlando was the editor there … pretty much ate my lunch for me! He basically dressed me down for having the temerity to walk into his office. I think he felt bad because as I was leaving he offers me this Jerry Lewis comic book page. He says, “Here, at least do them [comic book pages] the right size,” because I was doing them the size … [DC Comics editor] Julie Schwartz had sent me these beautiful originals. I was doing them really big, and Joe said do them the right size. As I’m walking out the door, he’s like, “And don’t go telling everybody Joe Orlando is giving out free originals!” I said, “No problem!”

Studied under Joe Orlando during college at the School Of Visual Arts... he was tough on everyone's art but really helped us understand storytelling; he also showed us many pages of art from the DC offices to help make his points in class. Grateful that I had experience with him.

Speaking of artwork sizes, did the standard size used for comics change at some point?  Artist Edition hardcovers usually print artwork at actual size and the Steve Ditko Artist Edition has larger dimensions than the Neal Adams one or the John Byrne one.

Paper size change just before I got in. What had been 12x18 became 10x15.

It was fascinating to watch some inkers struggle with the size change.
