This is the original cover art for Eddy Barriows' 2012 sketchbook. As soon as I saw it, I decided that I wanted it as a constant reminder of what it should feel like to read a good comic!

Love the Aparo, Lloyd!  I have a Phantom Stranger pin-up by Jim Aparo and a Brave & Bold page from him also. Great artist, who'd I'd like to get more of.

I love that Ramona Fradon Power Girl-- Fradon manages to strike a great balance between cartoony and straight. That piece looks like "Power Girl the Superhero" and not "Power Girl the Exhibitionist" as she is too often drawn.

Always loved Excalibur, it was alot of fun. Chris Claremont and Alan Davis
(with Paul Neary) create a series mixing Captain Britain and some of his
support case and villians with a few X-Men. One of the most memorable
images was the Comic Interview #56 cover which came oiut right before the
series. Thrilled to own the original.

JB, Stern's idea regarding the Phantom Stranger absolutely blows me away---if NuDC HAD to give him a definitive origin, why oh why couldn't it have been that one!

In love with Stern's idea re: Terry Thirteen and the Phantom Stranger.
I'll say it again: that Stern is a clever one!

••

Roger's idea was born of a little in-joke the editors did when Terry Thirteen was introduced into the Stranger's mythos. Previously the characters had appeared in independent series, in the same anthology title, so the Stranger made a little "wink at the audience" comment about them having "met" before. This to the great consternation of Thirteen, who was not "aware" of any such meeting. Plant a seed like that in the fertile ground of Roger's imagination, and you get. . .

(A few years back I was approached by an editor about the possibility of working on a Dr. Thirteen graphic novel. A well known skeptic who was also a comic fan was interested in writing it, to play up the skeptical angle. I pointed out that Terry Thirteen's skepticism doesn't really play well in a "reality" in which ghosts, demons, aliens, and all sorts of other things are REAL. I suggested that it might work better if Thirteen was debunking the FAKERS, of whom there would likely be even MORE in a world where those ghosts and demons, etc, were real. The project did not progress beyond this point, which was too bad, as it might have been fun.)

Curious. My spellchecker recognizes "Roger" but not "Roger's".

Recognizes "John's" and other possessives.
