Not sure I totally follow some of the above thinking. There's not enough story in the Nightwing piece to earn a double page splash? Hm.

Just curious...

Is the art below a waste of a double page splash?

No derailing the new art thread! (I think a discussion about what makes a good splash page would make an interesting thread!  Someone start one!  In the meantime....)

Take this!!!!

Mike Royer bought his wife some fancy dinner plates with the money I paid for this.  I think it looks like a house add pin up for Kirby's New Gods series back in the day.

Here's a detail of the central battle for you:

It's awful purty in person!

...not sure what the difference is?

••

There is no difference.

A double page spread should be more than just a large panel. There should be much more STORY to the picture than could be contained in, say, a full page splash or, especially, half a page. The "style" of the Spider-Book then, as dictated by the plot, was to have pages 2 and three be a spread, but the scene shown was not always fully worthy of two entire pages.

You may have noticed these days when I do double page spreads they are likely to be multiple panels, "cinematic" shots with actions that "cascade" across the fold.

The exception was in the JURASSIC PARK miniseries, where I was doing "widescreen" layouts on all the other pages, and used the three double page spreads to create a "3D" effect.

++

Is the art below a waste of a double page splash?

••

Yes.

Art is a learning process. When I offer my "sage council" it is based on forty years in the business, NOT a claim that I have ALWAYS done it right.

I always figured the DPS was a way for the artist to sell TWO pages in the aftermarket at poster prices.  The Nightwing, Kirby and the Spidey pages above look like that -- the Next Men pages looks a little more functional to story telling.

Of the three that Nathan posted, I think the middle one works best.
Did it need to be a double page spread? Maybe, maybe not, but it
makes the best use of the space.

Joe Hollon, that Kirby/Royer piece is amazing. Best to sleep with one
eye open. Oh, and pay no attention to me lifting it of the wall if you do.
