Steven, nice job with the JBNM covers!
I kinda wish JB was still filling in the black areas on the originals... but on the other hand, it is neat to "see" how the art is made...
Those covers are really well drawn. Congrats!

Thanks Nathan! I love the fact that they are "still" in production. haha...Spotting the blacks in it would have been cool, but equally as cool that they are not. Also that they are just on regular bristol with no familiar comic book page markings, like the printed blue margins and so forth. A regular page cut out of an even bigger piece of paper. I am assuming that was the case as the paper dimensions are "irregular". 19"x11.75" I never see pads of paper sold that size. Pretty cool I think.

That yellow smear across Northstar's head is not an example of "seeing the work". More an indication of the extremes to which Shooter would sometimes go to exercise his whim of iron. He declared that Northstar's head was too big on that page, and ordered a reduced stat be shot and PASTED ONTO THE ORIGINAL ART. Apparently, over the years, someone disagreed, and peeled off the stat. But that leaves us with the yellowed glue, so the piece is defaced -- no pun intended -- either way.

… I love to "see the work" and also lettering on the page.•• How I miss those days! Looking at the pages displayed on my walls, only two are without lettering. One is a Michael Golden HOWARD THE DUCK page, from the black and white magazine (where, for some reason, lettering was don on overlay), and the other a Sergio Aragones page (which I inked!) from the time after the lettering went to computer. Supposedly, the reason for the lettering being done this way is to facilitate foreign editions -- it removes the need to fit translations into existing balloon shapes and sizes, a particular problem in Germany, where they invariably seem to use three words to our one. Thing is, back in the day, when books ran late and lettering was done on overlay so it could be done at the same time as the pages were being inked, the inkers were paid more, since this meant they had to do more work (about 20% more). As far as I know, inkers did not receive an across-the-board raise when the lettering was permanently removed from the pages.

The Kirby pencil pages are incredible! I just can't believe pencils survived of his work in this way.
I'm really glad you got the Dan Dare pages, JB - you've got quite the collection!

Since Kirby would have received his artwork back, but these pencils did not come from him, or his estate, does that mean he received 2/3rds (the penciler's share) of the TRACED pages? And does this also mean there may be people out there who have purchased Jack Kirby SUPER POWERS pages, inked, which actually have NO Kirby work on them?

Speaking of art, a story. . . Had a small gathering for some of my theater folk friends over the weekend. One of the ladies had not been to the house before, so I was showing her some of the art on the walls upstairs. The "grown-up" part of the house, as t'were. She recognized the two pieces I have by British cartoonist Ronald Searle, and commented "I have a Hirschfeld." "Wow," said I, very impressed. "Of me," she added.
