Some demonstrations to middle school students on basic proportions for portrait drawing. Previously the art department was using white boards. Lucky to find this old, scratched up chalkboard.

Charlie:

It's very rare to find actual manga-style drawings on this board.  Is there more that you've done?

I generally move back and forth between the Western and Japanese styles myself.  I'm more comfortable with what I've developed within the past 20 years after having been influenced by both (see the other sketches on this thread, and my DeviantART.com gallery for examples).  A lot of people tend to knock it, and yet it can't be as bad as some of the stuff that's being done in comics today...

Andy:

It been a while since I used to see one of those chalkboards.  I remember being in school when that was your basic means of learning in the classroom.  Gives new meaning to the phrase, "Back in the day..."

I also remember one art teacher who use to go so against the standard proportions used in that lesson.  He insisted that the eyes were on a line two-thirds of the way up on the head, and the mouth resting on a line one-third down...

Ben:

Interesting take on the Boy Wonder there.  Kind of reminds me of one of the old Warner Brothers cartoons that Chuck Jones used to work on.

hi carmen,

yeah i love growing up in the 70s and 80s watching cartoons like star blazers, battle of the planets, shogun warriors and the such. then i really got into marvel comics when i started to read comics in the 80s. so i am between those 2 worlds i think. i don't get much feedback on my drawings here or on deviantart (btw i watch you on there). i am not sure if it is because of the style but that is what i watch as a kid and i think it was a great path to experience when it comes to art. anyway i am in good company then :)

Yeah, Carmen. White boards are great for most academic learning today, but for teaching drawing, nothing compares to the old chalkboard. I can use charcoal, various chalks and pastels and teach values much more effectively. Nevertheless, I like you, grew up learning on chalkboards "back in the day."

Joe,

That last picture really works for me.  Something about the composition for sure, but there is something else, too, that I can't put my finger on.  Well done.

Thanks William.
I know what you mean....
Seems the wood grain's realism creates the idea the head is a photo.
Add the Jack Davis type hand, and the cross pollenization of styles
keep you looking longer.
I like it, too.
