Joe, this looks familiar. From Venture Bros., right? Those were the days, when I could chill out watching Toon's "Adult Swim" for a while after returning home from a night shift. I will be watching Bill's space, too. In the meantime, some creative doodling spent during the afternoon wrung these out of me...
It's a collage of that girl I've been posting, along with a couple of other characters. The first one is a teammate and rival (more like the Green Lantern to her Green Arrow, or the Dr. Charles Winchester the 3rd to her Benjamin "Hawkeye" Pierce). The second one, at the bottom -- well, I felt like spoofing that craze about pirates. "Cap'n BLARRRRGGGGGGHHH!" "Been at sea too long much?"

After tossing around a dozen ideas, I've come up with this simple preliminary sketch for my next painting that -hopefully-nails down the positioning of the major elements involved (Speakers, Screen, Sign, Snack Stand). Still have to work out the people and the cars. Probably begin sketching on my canvas tomorrow. Painting should begin Friday.

Bill, Drive-in theaters were one piece of Americana that I sorely miss. I saw my last one outside of Wilmington, DE as a wee lad -- they were showing Gumball Rally (the stuntman on the motorcycle cracked me up). You couldn't show even one third of todays films outside, for fear of getting the local prudes and anti-violence cops up in arms. My sketch for the day...
Giving Jenny a rest to showcase one of her friends. Yui Saiji is codenamed "Kid Fury", an apt name given her abilities (super-strength, endurance and a healing factor akin to Wolverine's) and wild peronality. The character Sakura Haruno she's trading blows with at the bottom isn't one of mine -- she comes from a Japanese comic titled Naruto, created by Masashi Kishimoto and serialized in the weekly Shonen Jump anthologies. I'm thinking of giving Yui a slight redesign. Love how some Asian girls cut their hair in a bowl shape (must be an advantage if you have thick, straight hair). Giving her forelocks more length so that her eyes become somewhat hooded, adding a bit of "tough gal" effect to her, etc.

Sketchbook time - first concept sketch of a fallen angel tattoo an old friend of mine wants on her back. Been busy as sin lately (apart from my regular day job) doing concept and production art for a boardgame a guy at work is developing, as well as the continuing saga of Harry Carter, Space Trucker!

Mal, can you make it a bit more humorous? I think it might work better if the angel looks a little stunned from the fall.

Well, I guess I couldn't just put that pencil down after I picked it up again this afternoon...
Bristol board with blue line and 2H graphite mechanical pencils. Looking at this piece, I wanted to put a little more detail into the scene and tighten it up a bit, but I'll probably just redo it as a solo shot for my DeviantART.com gallery over the weekend. This brings to mind something that John Byrne had said about composing his final art, and maybe doing the same. I recall him saying that he draws the foremost figure in the picture first, then follows with the others. (In this case, that'd be the ninja getting set to lunge in with his sword on the right-hand edge of the image.)

May not look like much, but I've actually made decent progress. Should have my picture drawn tonight onto the 2'x4' canvas and begin painting tomorrow as planned.
