I find the wildfires horrifying - It’s something I have never become accustomed to. We have fires in Sylmar, Santa Clarita, and of course the Skirball Center/Getty Center fire that was a constant presence yesterday and continues today.
Wildfires used to seem like something that happened in remote areas, but earlier this year the Verdugo Mountains above Burbank burned, and that is the most familiar mountain range to me. I’ve been hiking it and seeing it for 25 years. To see it on fire was gut wrenching. Those feelings all came back yesterday. The Getty Center fire and smoke yesterday makes it so immediate.
The truly terrible situation is in Ventura, where the fire races at rapid and seemingly unimaginable speed, destroying entire neighborhoods.
Before yesterday, the only fire I recall within Los Angeles city limits is when Griffith Park burned years ago, and you could see it from the whole city.
Stay safe, everyone!
