I wouldn't even call that a good example of his work. It's so BUSY. JLGL is usually much more clean and elegant. Therein lies his brilliance.(That page happens to be hanging on my Studio wall!)

I was once read an interview with Ian Anderson, a musician, a very successful Rock'n'Roll artist, a guy who led a band for decades and sold millions of records, massive global tours, etc., and he was asked, how did you end up playing, um, the flute in a Rock band? He said, well, I started out on the guitar, but then I heard Eric Clapton, so I figured I needed to find something else to play. When I see a page like that which JB posted, I can just imagine how incredibly intimidating it could be to a would-be comicbook artist...!!!

His hands! All so in-character. Even the background characters. Even just sitting there, they are sitting there in-character!

I have some dollars for an Artist Edition if they’d kindly print one.

The way Garcia Lopez draws women from a distance reminds me to some degree of Alan Davis. Just noticing that now with that last panel of Lois and Superman in the page JB posted.
I've said before how growing up I was totally a Marvel kid, but Garcia Lopez's art was so good on the DC toy packaging that it was almost enough to make me a DC kid (it took a couple more years for me to dip my toe in the water, finally persuaded by a certain superstar comic artist rebooting Superman).

I keep staring at that superman page, and the more I do, I’m noticing what’s “not“ there more than what’s there. Such equal confidence and grace in those ink lines.

A couple years ago, JLGL came to a local con. I sauntered up with some books for him to sign, thinking I’d ask him some deep artistic questions...and was completely tongue-tied. I could barely speak to him. And I was 50 at the time. An absolute master.

As a "Marvel Zombie" in my youth, I never came across JLGL's work until the Batman versus the Incredible Hulk DC/Marvel cross-over. I remember as a teenager thinking "who drew this?" "who is José Luis García-López? Why haven't I ever heard of him? His Hulk and Batman are amazing!"
I still look at that oversized edition and marvel (pun intended, I guess) at the art. There's a interesting back inside cover "editor's notes" on his cover art that as a kid was interesting.

Just stumbled on this thread. Two points of note:
1) IDW is publishing an Artists Edition, featuring Jose's work. Tons of scans have already been gathered and I'd encourage anyone who has original art from Jose, to consider reaching out to Scott Dunbier, to share it. Publication date is expected in spring 2025.
2) The editorial notes on the inside of the back cover, from Batman vs the Hulk was completely fictional. Jose always produces 4 cover prelims for editors to chose from. Not only has Jose said that the above never happened, but he was unable to think of a time when he received requests from any editor to change his original work.... throughout his entire career. (Doesn't mean that it has never happened, though one would imagine that is a possibility.)
