"Monday is Memorial Day, literally a legal national holiday."________________________________________________
One in which JB will not be partaking.
He's not denying that Monday is Memorial Day, he's saying that he won't be taking a holiday (day off of work) that day. It's in the context of the posts.
Your response only works if the conversation was "Hey, JB, Monday is a National Holiday" and his response was "Not a holiday". But that's not the case. He was wished to enjoy his holiday (making the reference to his PERSONAL holiday, not the NATIONAL one) and he replied that he was not going to take the day off of work, but try to get further ahead on work instead.
But what I think some people are really reacting to here is the (mis)perception that JB was impolite in his response. That he should have just said "Thanks! You too!" That would be, after all, the more common response. But JB is more of a factual or literal communicator than an emotional one, IMO. Just read the words, and not into them.
