The only way to change things would be for the people who support sensible restrictions on firearms to vote with the same fanatical, single-minded consistency as the gun nuts do.  But instead, this fall everyone will vote for Republicans because they are unhappy about gas prices and inflation.  And afterwards, gas prices will stay high and so will the body count.  Hurray.

As I said elsewhere, if only dead elementary school children had been the filibuster. Then the GOP in the Senate would've protected them.

Shook by this one. It's elementary schools now.

Of all the horrible details coming up, the report that the shooter was "briefly engaged" by law enforcement (you know, before he went on to kill children) is probably what disturbed me the most.

Maybe you should have "engaged him" a little bit more?

In more news guaranteed to piss off anyone sane:

Families in Uvalde are having to take DNA tests....because the victims bodies were so badly mangled the military-style weapons that they're unrecognizable.

There has to be a special place in Hell for the gun nuts who care more about possessing whatever weapons they want than innocent lives and the politicians who ignore or excuse away these incidents and continue to allow these to happen.

Whether or not you're a fan of sports, this pregame press conference by the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, Steve Kerr, is powerful.  It screams for action.  It's raw and emotional.  He says everything many of us wish we could say if given a microphone and a spotlight.

For context, Kerr's father was murdered in a terrorist attack in Beirut in 1984.  He's been very outspoken on this issue in the years since.

Guns now kill more children in America than
cars.

Why will idiots like Ted Cruz not see this as
a problem, a disgrace, a tragedy.

Utter madness

Matt - I was coming here to post Kerr's comments.

What it comes down to is that we need more people as passionate about addressing this in Washington, rather than lining their pockets with NRA money.

With each new tragedy like this, I think ok this is the one, this is the one which will make the US repeal the 2nd Amendment. But it never happens.
Another rogue element from the "well regulated militia" I guess

The 2nd Amendment will never be repealed.  Ever.  That's a lost cause. it's so ingrained in so many Americans that it's ridiculous to think that we would ever have the votes to erase that amendment.

We can only mitigate it.  We need laws to fortify against it and to mitigate it.  But the 2nd Amendment ain't going away.

And a well-regulated militia in 1791 only had muskets and flintlock pistoles. I'm sure the Founding Fathers never thought there would be AR-15s and other semi- and fully- automated weapons used against children 231 years later.

The two are not comparable.

Biden has a opportunity now to lead from the front.  He won't.  They never do.  Clinton didn't, Bush didn't, Obama (possibly worst of all with Sandy Hook) didn't, Trump didn't -- and Biden won't either. They all love the sound bites pretending to give a shit, but nothing comes of it.  Biden could sit as his desk tomorrow and sign any number of executive orders creating immediate change.  That's not to say these orders wouldn't be lawyered away in the months and years to come -- but it could start a wave of change - it could start a real narrative that it's possible in America.

I think the change needs to include entertainment.  Stop making movies and tv shows and video games and comic books etc using guns and gun violence as cool and entertaining.  After a generation hasn't been bombarded with the coolness of gun violence - perhaps the social narrative will have changed.

Guys, nothing’s going to change. Murdered elementary school children are
now an acceptable price to pay for these fucks to have guns. There’s
nothing that will change their minds. Maybe if it actually happens to one of
them or their family, but I doubt that would even move the needle.
