Hi John,

Recently I was reading an online article about you and one of the commenters mentioned that is was common knowledge that your art was influenced by Japanese animation.

I think I've read about every interview with you I can find and I don't recall you ever mentioning ANY animation influence on you art. But I was surprised awhile back to hear you mention Moebius so I figured I'd ask.

1) Has Japanese Animation/Manga influenced your work?

2) Has any animation influenced your work?

Thanks!

Second time this has been mentioned, recently, and I really don’t know where it comes from. I’ve seen Japanese animation that has impressed me mightily—AKIRA and GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES are two examples. But neither anime nor manga have had a conscious influence on my work.

Off topic kind of but... I think a great example of an American artist who was influenced would be Wendy Pini. Maybe Frank Miller too? Neither just took onboard surface elements, and they were well before any bandwagon. I used to like a lot of Japanese comics and animation but it's been really worn out to where I see vapid smiling mouths, big eyes and fruit colored jokey looking hair I kind of check-out now. Last series I enjoyed somewhat was The Last Exile which had a steam-punk aspect. They, like here, have a problem with 'people inspired by people inspired by people inspired by', getting three or four generations removed from great storytelling and/or wider ranging experiences/interests/influences.

Maybe Frank Miller too?

Definitely.

He was more influenced by LONE WOLF & CUB and more "adult" manga, not the big eyes and funny hair kind, I think.

Especially in the pacing and the panel design, this is pretty clear as early as his DAREDEVIL run.
