I'd probably feel better if the GOP didn't have such a deep bench of wannabe fascists who are far less incompetent than Trump. We assume that someone like DeSantis wouldn't have the same blind faith from the base that Trump has been able to achieve, but it's pretty clear to me that the base was just a big vacuum waiting for a figure to coalesce around.  They'd been primed for this by their media bubble for the better part of three decades.  Once Trump is done (dead or otherwise), the base will coalesce around another, similar figure, and DeSantis is definitely better at managing the levers of power than Trump, with his sporadic brainfart flashmob approach, couldn't ever do.

He's back and he's as mad as ever.
Able to end the Ukraine invasion in a day (presumably by
giving it to Russia), the nation's favourite president
ever, was planning to shut federal education department.

The list from his ranty, rant, rant just goes on.
Dementia seems to have taken complete hold.

I see he’s now trying to shift blame for the insurrection to Pence, after the former veep’s rather namby-pamby comments about how history will judge Trump.

A classic “I know you are, but what am I” response. Just what we’d expect from someone with the emotional maturity of a six year old.

At this point I think De Santis is the clear frontrunner for the Republican nomination.  I can't imagine Trump winning again, but as JB pointed out, we couldn't imagine it the first time until it happened.

DeSantis is the only GOP candidate with a prayer of unseating Trump.

And Trump is going to come after him with the flaming intensity of an orange sun-god.

If DeSantis somehow manages to win enough primaries to technically "win" the nomination, there is no universe in which I can imagine Trump conceding. He will just insist the elections are all rigged and he really won.

So either Trump gets the nomination or he burns the party to the ground.

If Trump wins the nomination, he stands a VERY good chance of winning the election. There are a lot of reasons why, but fundamentally it has to do with our shitty electoral college and the tiny number of swing states that decide every election.

Would Trump start his own party to really mix things up?

That happens, Biden wins.

Oh, and "Russia, if you're listening"... both those froot loops basically sent a message to Putin last night to just hang in there because they won't support Ukraine at all if they get in in 2024 (and I'm sure if they can be helped in any way the erstwhile Soviet KGB man would only be too happy to).

Of course he would. He’s all but said it out loud.

If Trump can stay healthy, the nomination is his. The same narrative played out in 2015. Remember when Jeb Bush was the front runner? That ended as soon as the first debate was over. Trump permanently damaged the brand of Jeb and every other GOP candidate and he will do the same to DeSantis, Haley and anyone else who tries to peel off his voters. Which is why I hope DeSantis runs and why he’d be smart not to. Trump voters want a fighter and no other GOP nom will fight Trump at his level because they’re afraid to piss off his supporters. Trump doesn’t care about pissing off DeSantis voters because he knows they won’t resent Trump, they’ll resent DeSantis for not fighting back. The core GOP electorate are soldiers in a culture war and Trump is their general. You don’t fire a general, you replace them. And you don’t replace a strong fighter with a weaker one. The GOP is stuck with Trump until he dies or until another Republican out-fights him on the debate stage.

Yep. The only way we can move forward without Trump is if he dies. Been
hoping for that for years now.

Two words: Electoral College.

Once again, the number of votes count less than where they are cast.
