Was there a time that you felt nervous about whether or not you were
good enough at writing to take over a series?

Was there a particular time when that changed?

Yes, to both. And I’m not being snarky. But I really can’t break it down any better than that.

I guess the closest I've come to that was a few years back when I was talking with Chris Ryall about doing a DIC TRACY book for IDW. Tracy was long a fave, but when I sat down to think about what I would do with the characters, I drew a complete blank. Actually lost some sleep over it.

Finally said to Chris that I am the go-to guy if you want a story about two planets crashing into each other, but for hard boiled detective stories, better all somebody else. (This is one of the reasons I've not done Batman for any prolonged period.)

For those who might have missed it, this is a sample page I worked up:

Our deep loss on both counts. Would being an "art robot" keep you from collaborating with someone who had more of a knack for the detective side of things?  < id="protanopia"> < id="deuteranopia"> < id="tritanopia">

Remember when Alan Davis drew that Mike W Barr story where Batman met
Sherlock Holmes? Wouldn’t you love to see JB tackle homes! Swoon….

I always wanted to see you do more Batman, but totally respect your reasons for not doing it. If only more creators were as self-aware.
