QUOTE:
"Talia Head, pronounced HEED in the British way" |
|
|
I'm not sure what Rucka was on about.
I've heard Newcastle fans sing "heed" to make "head" rhyme with the "Reid" of "Peter Reid" (to the tune of Yellow Submarine), but most assuredly the standard British way to say head would be to rhyme it with bed.

I dig the way JB draws Ben. It's my favorite rendition, with the Kirby/Sinnot one being a close second. When JB drew the Thing, the plates on his body may have been different from panel to panel - as he's depicted by other artists - but his face seemed to stay pretty consistent. That was different.

There are areas of Scotland that pronounce it Heed.
But in the whole, it rhymes with bed in the UK

A single instance is all that is sometimes needed for someone to support their argument. Doesn't really make sense, but there it is!

Further piece about the colouring (& the language). I’ve just checked my digital Epic collection, & the panel is much more the first one rather than the second one, & includes the word ‘Hell’•• On that, the "rule" seemed to be that "Hell" could be used as a reference to what was, in Marvel, an actual place, but could not be used as a cuss word. So, oddly, "I'll see you in Hell" was okay, but "Go to Hell" was not.

At the risk of sounding too much like the old grouch I am, I think I preferred the time when there were even dumb inconsistencies about using a naughty word like hell compared to the anything goes that gradually took over as kids as the primary readers were eventually ignored.

And the movies have made it worse. It's as if the whole superhero genre has been taken over by that low strata of fans that used to ask for nude sketches of the female characters at cons.

Hasn't there been a two-tier approach to the kind of output there is from these properties for some time now? That which is appropriate for young kids and then that which can compete in the marketplace for comparable output in traditional action/thriller fare? In other words, get 'em young and keep 'em for longer than has been in the past?

What do you see as being “for young kids”?

FF 259 has Doom, a battle royal, JB's rubble, and my favorite "It's Clobberin' Time" with the car. I still remember thinking: This *IS* the World's Greatest Comic Magazine

"And the movies have made it worse."

It irks me that the movies are using language that most mainstream comics STILL aren't using today, even after the end of the Comics Code. S-words seem to be liberally used to guarantee a PG-13 rating to avoid the PG "kiss of death".

Offhand, the print equivalent of what the animated series achieve ...
