Understanding that this is an expression of concern, not a prediction….

It may not be predictive, but it's surely a barometer of the threats humanity faces right this second. And that alone should be cause for concern.

The only logical way to stop this madness is to add more "defensive" NATO bases.

I wanted to take the chance to thank the USA for how they saved Spain's democracy from 1948 to 1978 by making an agreement with a fascist country which hosted dozens of concentration camps during WWII to add military bases "against communism".

This kind of attitude is what will take us to world peace, just like we have safely avoided global warming. Go capitalism! You can do it again.

So... it's capitalists selling people on freedom that makes them want to defend a free nation when invaded? For what... profit?

Russia is supposedly not communist anymore, or at least when it suits someone to tell me that it isn't. They came from that hopeless system often ruled by fascistic strongmen, under which millions of them were killed, and now they are under more of a criminal operation fascist strongman, who was somehow 'forced' to invade a neighbor...

If you want somebody to blame it's not the Ukrainians, not the U.S. (unless Trump and co. while they were kissing Putin ass)... the problem is not enough Russians that don't just roll over for or actively back the current 'strongman' tyrant.

In an ultimate choice between freedom and a living death on our knees to egomaniacal visions of supposed glory with another psycho 'strongman' at the top... I would fight to the death against that, like some of my family have had to in the past, like brave Ukrainians are having to do. My only regret is they didn't listen to Biden earlier when they were getting all the straight information from him.

A lot of Americans volunteered to fight and possibly die for a free Spain when it was invaded in the 1930s. Which isn't to say that people should not have grievances with many different U.S. administrations backing the worst side many times, they recognized Pol Pot and his people's liberation army of Kampuchea (liberating the people from living) over a communist Vietnamese government that was far saner (and Ho Chi Minh originally patterned a free Vietnamese constitution on the U.S. constitution).

Here we can (hopefully still) say or write such true if not so simple things... you can't inside Russia or Belarus, and I have heard you sometimes can't depending on who and where in Spain you are. There is no way to blame freedom for the brutal actions of tyrants though, except if the people have really gone soft in the head... just keep your head and don't be manipulated into a zero sum blame game.

Putin being provoked is a cop-out. He is the one with tends of thousands of deaths on his hands of Ukrainians and Russians. His need for buffer states is a sham argument as Ukraine was not joining Nato any time soon before he attacked it under froot loop lies about Nazis and corruption (the man who murders his political rivals might know a lot about that though). I wish someone there would've caved his skull in a year ago.

But sure, join Iranian religious fanatics in burning U.S. flags. That'll be a great help.

Russia has - time and again - shown it cannot be trusted. Putin's own time will come.

There's a looooot of angles on this whole thing and I'm not saying it's exclusively for this motive, but short answer yes:

War is profit. Just like Afghanistan, Iraq and countless other experiences you guys closely know. We should all at least start to contemplate these geopolitical and economic realities and go a step further in reasoning than "Strong Man Bad / Freedom Good" some day.

*Edited to add: Just to clarify, I'm not defending Putin in any way, who is obviously a psycho as most world leaders are.

It's the old, they only want the Sudetenland... if we abandon those Czechoslovakian people and surrender that land surely it will be "peace in our time"! This was presaged by the Luftwaffe invading and bombing the people of Guernica among others and yet so many wanted to pander to someone even Churchill admired for merely standing up for his supposedly defeated nation (luckily Baldwin was in to spend on the latest Rolls-Royce Merlin engines for aeroplanes and start the development of radar which many on the left saw as provoking).

They also had japan's incursions into mainland Asia as well as Italy grabbing in North Africa out of supposed necessity (and The League Of Nations meant to avoid all this crumpled like so much paper). Pieces of paper (or words on screens) and reality are almost always two different things, it seems a massive mistake always comes from confusing the two (like backing someone who just wants to make America great again or a people's liberator of Cambodia). If anyone emboldened Putin it would have to be his western admirers leading him to think he could get away with more than ever.

Every country in the world has another nation's military base close to one of its borders. This is not a justification to invade another sovereign country.

Of course, it's also interesting to note that Russia invaded one of the counties without a NATO military presence, which undermines the premise anyway. They were so angry about those damn bases being so close by that they decided to punish the country that had none of them (which also happened to be a country that had given up its nukes to Russia in an international treaty whereby Russia guaranteed to never take military action against Ukraine).

Putin must be quietly delighted in the number of useful idiots in the world.

That is a bit naive.
Let's say Mexico would start buying Chinese weapons, would invite Chinese military advisers into the country and maybe sign a alliance treaty with the Chinese, the ink on the paper would not yet be dry and American troops would be in Mexico City.
