Tennessee and other states want to make drag shows illegal.

This has the earmarks of so many anti-Gay campaigns: fear. So many people who identify as straight seem terrified that anything remotely Gay might be somehow contagious. That they might “catch” it.

They tell us more about themselves than about drag performers.

(Yes, I am aware that drag does not automatically equal Gay.)

True, but I confess to being not just a little annoyed when I heard the story about them holding reading sessions to children. Just being deliberately provocative to poke the bear and goad reaction that is not otherwise warranted.

Respectability Politics are gross whether directed toward black people or LGBTQ people.

Drag Queen Story Hour is an event that is voluntarily attended, aimed toward families of primary school-aged children. These children generally can’t drive themselves to the library, and in this age of helicopter parenting, aren’t allowed to be off on their own without their parents’ permission. So every child there should be with their parents or someone entrusted by their parents. There is an interest there from families who want an opportunity for their children to see people who don’t conform to gender norms. If people find it offensive, don’t attend.

If people are concerned with the sexual abuse of children, start with places where it actually happens, like the Catholic Church or the Southern Baptist Conference.

Agree with Michael wholeheartedly. This isn't a case of anything being inflicted on kids; this was something they or their parents could choose to attend.
More kids are psychologically damaged in church, school, and other "safe" places than in book readings by whoever happens to be up front.

Drag queens and transgender people are the last "safe" targets of violent bigotry, intolerance and wedge issue politics.
Fuck Tennessee for engaging in this kind of "let's just swap 'trans' for 'Jews' or 'blacks'" kind of inhumanity.
I half-hope/half-suspect anyone with tourism interests in TN is spitting mad about this right now...

One of the events that set it off in TN happened in my town. Is was a drag
brunch. Nothing involving kids or anything. It just happened to be two doors
down from the local Children’s Theater. It was on a Sunday morning when
absolutely nothing was going on at the theater. There were masked
protesters outside it demanding our local leaders be brave enough to put
their names on documents to allow these kinds of events to happen and not
hide their acceptance of such heinous acts. Yes, EVERY protester was so
brave they each had a full mask on concealing everything but their eyes.
That’s bravery on display right there.

Having been to a Drag Queen Story Time, I'm very
curious as to your perception of what goes on.
I'm interested to see if you're perception and
reality are aligned or how far apart they may be.

I don't know what Drag Queen Story Time is like and I don't care. I hope everyone who attends and performs has a grand ol' time. I have the same healthy indifference to drag that I do say, line dancing or karaoke. Go for what you know, not for me.

I just don't want to have to discuss and defend it in the same breath that I would the likes of which have been mentioned here in response to my inartfully worded remark. You can take drag off and go about your business and lead your life, not that you should have to. It's a lifestyle. Doesn't mean people don't catch hell from some because of it, but you can't remove or stop being gay or trans or the rest of LGBTQ+.

It's not the same kind of conversation.

Proving that the Right loves big government. Restrict LBGT people. restrict women. There are even states wanting to make electric cars illegal. Free market? Only when they agree with it.

But why do you insist they’re only having DQST to get a rise out of people?
