The mini-origins included as back-up stories really elevated the characters/helped put meat on the bones. Shaman's back story was so tragic and it was a little strand of genius, I think, to tie him in with Snowbird's origin as well. If memory serves, we never got one for Puck did we? I imagine this was by design, given revealing more can reduce the fun of certain characters, but it might have helped stave off Mantlo's disastrous stab at it.

Of the many things Mantlo got wrong about Alpha, his treatment of Puck was by far the worst. One of the most unique heroes in mainstream comics lost everything that made him special.

The entire team was mishandled in my opinion. At the time I thought it had more to do with JB's leaving the title and that it was sabotaged as an act of revenge. I was in my early teens and AF was my favorite. You can understand my mindset, it became completely unrecognizable...

What are you guys on about? Alpha Flight is a 28-issue maxi-series written and drawn by John Byrne. There haven’t been any issues of the title since it was published decades ago.

That's definitely how I chose to think of it. I checked out when Walter became Wanda... I just couldn't tolerate what was done to my favorite 10ft monster... I would pop in every once in a while over the years and was relieved to know that I didn't miss much.

Wallace, I think they published additional issues taking place on earth 1578628. But yes, the real alpha flight was never published again.

If I rebooted Alpha Flight, the first page would be a splash of Judd sitting in a chair reading a stack of comics and laughing at how "those guys sure took some liberties, eh?"
And then I'd pick up some years after the end of JB's run with most of what happened since set aside, using the original core team.

Yeah, that's pretty much where I land on the topic.

Anybody pick up the facsimile edition of Alpha Flight #1? Looks like it came out in July 2019.
