This "embarrassment" take comes off as a little unfair.
Just as it made sense that early creators looked to what was familiar to them, the circus mentioned above as being a good example, so too I like to think that later generations did the same.
Not a lot of folks going to the circus these days, so wouldn't it be consistent for current artists to look to contemporary daring-do inspiration like extreme sports (sky divers, motorcycle and race car drivers, etc)?
And I believe the MCU folks said that they used the Ultimates for inspiration for a lot of their costume design, so there seems to be a lot of back and forth going on between the mediums in terms of influence.

JB, what do you consider your best design? Your worst?

•••

Sorry, almost missed this!

I think Guardian stands as my best design. Northstar and Aurora would be a close second (with a nod to Mark Gruenwald for suggesting they mirror each other.)

Worst? Hm. Let’s not feed the trolls!

Of course, I have related multiple times the irony inherent in Guardian’s costume. When that version of the Canadian flag* was introduced, when I was in 8th grade, I was immediately offended by it. I was already enough of a history buff that I felt a nation’s flag should be drenched in such, but the new flag was basically an exercise in graphic design. It’s history stretched no further back than an artist’s sketch pad.

Makes a great costume, tho!

________

* Yes, to the countless artists who don’t seem to GET it, Mac’s costume is the Canadian flag folded vertically and wrapped around his left side.

(And please don’t tell me there are artists who DO get that, but don’t realize that’s a stylized maple leaf 🍁 in the middle!)

I won’t post them here, but the figures put out by Marvel licensees of Mac and especially Heather (grrr) in the battle suit are just a bunch of random red spikes. I think Bowen has been the only one to get that detail right.

Guardian was a great costume design.

Silver Banshee is worth a mention (at the least!) -- another great design.

Guardian fer sure!
Red and white just pops for me anyway so that got my attention but the asymmetric design is what sets it off. Bonus: I prefer helmets!

I liked the long stem, specially the way it would flare out at the bottom. Too bad some colorists would color in the whole leg ala the Angel.

Obviously, the stem is short on the flag, but I like the
idea of it running longer down the leg. Short just seems
to end so abruptly.
