Since the eighties I only have had my mexican version of World of Krypton. A smaller than digest sized comic with a very lousy and condensed translation. In those years, 22-pages american comics were rearranged into 32 pages showing no interest at all in respecting the original storytelling. At the time, an unknowingly horrible edition that could not ruin such a great comic.

Now, I have finally bought the series in TPB to discover that the story is even better, and the dialogues(!!) and the art, and the designs, everything. What a delight was to really read it for the first time.

I think World of Krypton should have a place next to works like Batman year one and Walter Simonson Manhunter. It is in my opinion one the best comics I have ever read and also one of the BEST SCI-FI STORIES IN ANY MEDIUM.

Mr Byrne, if I can ask....
How did you exactly envision the planet to be? I mean, how BIG do you imagine Krypton was?
And how many inhabitants do you think it had for the time of Jor-El?

Thank you again for one more great story...

Since DC had shifted Superman’s powers to being derived from solar radiation, I felt Krypton no longer needed to be gigantic. (The whole heavy gravity thing didn’t really work anyway, once Superman started flying.)

So, I felt it was basically Earth sized.

Population was pretty low by Jor-El’s time.

Somehow, I skipped this.

Amazing that such a highly praised work by JB still remains for me to visit after almost a literal lifetime of pouring over his work.

Thank you, John, for all your stories and art, great interviews and good times on this board!

I enjoyed this story, both JB's writing and Mignola's art was top notch. And the "Return to Krypton" story was a fitting companion.

JB, did you intend that last story to be some sort of closure to all things Krypton?

I seem to vaguely recall a World of Smallville and World of Metropolis series, though I'm not sure how much, if any, involvement JB had in those.

Rich, World of Smallville and World of Metropolis
were indeed wriiten by JB with, if I recall
correctly, art by Kurt Schaffenburger (sic)/Alfredo
Alcala AND Al Williamson respectively. Both series,
as you might expect, focused on the earlier, pre
Kal-el stories of both places and giving new insight
into Ma and Pa Kent's history in WofS, and a feud
between Perry White and Lex Luthor in WofM. Not
certain if they have ever been reprinted but if you
can track them down they're well worth a read.

I long ago gave up any idea that I—or anyone else—could bring closure to ANY story.

Darren: Slight correction...

WORLD OF METROPOLIS was penciled by Win Mortimer and inked
by Dick Giordanao (though I recall detecting some Frank
McLaughlin in there).

I loved the comics you did with Mike Mignola. Your words worked well with his art.
