Found this elsewhere:“I once read that Byrne later based Logan's face on actor Bruce (Hill Street Blues, Half Past Dead, Dinocroc) Weitz.” This comment is three years old, but since nothing dies on the internet, perhaps it’s time for a reminder that my “model” for Logan was Paul D’Amato, as seen in SLAP SHOT (1977).

Whoever "read" that about Bruce Weitz could've easily internet-ed his way to the knowledge that the Mick Belker character on Hill Street Blues debuted around the time JB was departing the X-Men.
Probably just as easily could've found the JBF and all kinds of straight-from-the-man-himself information.
Oh well...
Anyway, as much as SLAP SHOT seems like a movie that couldn't possibly be made today, so too does the original Wolverine.

Paul D’Amato in that film has a great face. I can totally see it.

Looked him up and dang, he has that feral quality JB captured with Wolverine. Great choice of model/inspiration.

His eyes make him look unhinged. Here is one of his old headshots.
And here is a more recent photo of Paul.

Is there a real world example of what Wolverine’s hairdo is, besides the X- Men movies? I looked at pictures of Paul D’Amato in Snapshot and his hair didn’t look like what his comic hair is and definitely not what it became.

I believe for that you’d have to read a Dave Cockrum interview? His was the first hand to publish Logan’s unmasked appearance IIRC.

The lead singers of A Flock of Seagulls had a hairdo that wasn't too far off in the 80s.
Edited to get rid of a rogue apostrophe...

Dave’s Wolverine was a rougher version of his LoSH Timberwolf. Which just pushes the hair back a notch but does not provide an “origin.”

On his IMDB page under the "did you know?" section, it says "Was the inspiration for artist John Byrne's depiction of Wolverine in "Uncanny X-Men".

It’s a weird journey. Seeing SLAP SHOT in the theater, first run. Taking notice of the particular kind of madness D’Amato brought to his character. Finding that seeping into my Wolverine, and decades later contacting D’Amato to tell him about it. (By then I felt he would know who Wolverine was. He did, and was much amused.)
