I took a trip to England and France in August 2001 and our tour guide, riding on a bus through Normandy, said that unexploded ordnance turned up from time to time. I guess I can see that in a sparsely populated (though heavily toured) area like that--but finding an unexploded bomb in London would be terrifying.

In the movie/TV serial QUATERMASS AND THE PIT, when an alien spaceship is found buried deep in the heart of London the first thought is that it’s a UXB. Very topical at the time.

An early story on Coronation Street (circa early-mid '60s) had an unexploded doodlebug unearthed in the back of one of the row of flats (Uncle Albert Tatlock's?). The young character Lucille went missing when the thing went off and dramatically took out the middle house and they thought she'd been in there (but wasn't). There was an empty gap in the row for quite awhile on the show after that.

I lived around the corner from such a gap. A house that was almost surgically excised by a German bomb during the Blitz. Things like that, plus relatives and their friends talking so much about the War led to false memories of that time. It was only when I did the math that I realized that I couldn’t have actually experienced those events. Those “memories” sure are vivid, tho!

After watching programs about nuclear holocaust in the early '80s I had many vivid dreams with mushroom clouds outside the window. They weren't real but definitely were experiences that informed me. I think a lot of people had these back then, and perhaps they're making a comeback now.

The Second World War is still very present in Germany due to unexploded aerial bombs. Literally every day an aerial bomb has to be defused somewhere, mostly in city centers. If you are planning a major excavation, you first have to visit an authority that analyzes aerial photographs from the Second World War to see if bombs were dropped there. This is a video of the detonation of an aerial bomb in the center of Munich that could not be defused. Scary stuff.

I hadn't heard that about Germany but jeez, we dropped so many tons of bombs on them during WW2 it makes sense that there are a number still undiscovered. I hope the bomb teams haven't lost lives defusing them.

We still find a bomb in Austria sometimes! Happens evry few years, I would say!
