The notion of Superman’s “birthday” being February 29th was introduced as a sop to the aging and increasingly loud fanboys who demanded an “explanation” of how the character could have been around since 1938 and still looked young. (How this worked for his supporting cast was not explained.)

One of the earliest warning signs that the wrong fans were being listened to and, eventually, taking over.

I would've just said the guy is an alien... who knows what aging is like for them, but yeah, of course, who ever asks this about Popeye or Donald Duck?

In Whiz Comics #52 Captain Marvel chooses February 29 as
his birthday, as well.
