Not so much recently (post-COVID), but for a few years there, say 2013 through 2018, I was gong to cons and getting quite a few books and prints signed by my favorite artists, writers, and, well...others. I think of signatures as a memento of meeting these creative people who brought me so much joy. I don't buy stuff autographed just to have autographed stuff.
I've gotten books signed by Sal Buscema (just a couple), Joe Staton (inked one of the books I had Sal sign), Steve Englehart (signed a Defenders cover that Sal also signed), Herb Trimpe, Michael Golden, Ron Wilson, George Perez, Walt Simonson, Neal Adams, and Gene Simmons (signed my copy of the first Marvel KISS comic).
Speaking of KISS, I had artist Ken Kelly sign my Destroyer and Love Gun album covers, plus some prints and a Walking Dead #1 variant he did the cover for.
I've also had photo ops with some folks that I later had sign the photo, including Stan Lee, William Shatner, John Schneider, and Lou Ferrigno.
The last signing I had was JB on some of my favorite books of his, then the next day he and Shatner (again!) signed copies of the hardcover Star Trek: New Visions Omnibus. Figure it's not gonna get much better than all that.

Accidentally exposing him to charges of fraud if he goes to resell it as an original, maybe? Admittedly not a terribly likely scenario, but given the recent debate on this board regarding that X-Men cover mock-up, I’d say likely enough.
Though I was more thinking about if I were in that kids shoes - I’d rather know the truth even if it was disappointing and disillusioning.
Of course, I wouldn’t have made that disclosure to the kid myself. It’s a cynical adult that tells a kid Santa isn’t real.

Stan signed lots of stuff himself. Many of Jack Kirby’s signatures were actually signed by his wife, Roz. It all muddies the waters, but since it’s impossible to tell, it makes no sense to dismiss all signatures.

And that's another reason I don't just simply buy autographed items.
Not that I ever plan to sell any of my signed stuff (some was personalized), though someday it'll all end up with someone else or destroyed, but I like the idea of watching the signer sign it. Not only to know it's legit, but also, again, I think of it as a memento of meeting them.
But yeah, telling that kid that was dick move.

As an accumulator of autographs I have several that were personalized, but not to me. Signatures of people who died before I was even born. But I have said it would be fun to collect antique autographs personalized to “John”. I could hang them around my house and pretend I was immortal.

One of my prized possessions is a THOR OMNIBUS by Walt. I got it for a
song from eBay. It’s has a personalized autograph to someone not named
Brian, but it also has a WAY cool Thor sketch next to it. Now, I’ve met Walt
and have a few comics signed by him (and Weezie) but I never got a sketch
and now I have one.

I have a GARFIELD strip that is personalized “To Joe, thanks for the idea!”
Which gives me a giggle every time someone reads it and looks impressed
assuming that I must’ve given Jim Davis the idea for the strip!
