Hi JB,

Today I was telling mf GF that some of my happiest memories from childhood of late summer were going to a stream in the New Forest where we would have a picnic and I would take a comic with me to read.

One comic that stands out in my mind from such a trip was Action Comics #1 (a British reprint, this was probably 1988), and I hope you don't mind answering a handful of questions sparked by the memory.

Here goes:

1. How did it come to pass that you wrote, rather than wrote and drew, this comic?

2. How did Art Adams get involved?

3. How did you find working with Art Adams?

4. How do you view the issue looking back now?

Personally, I recall looking forward to reading it, knowing it was a significant length and something to get my teeth into (ha!). Batman's reveal that he calmly swam his way out quicksand stands out in my mind for some reason.

Once JB has answered, for the rest of the forum: any thoughts on this issue?

I’m gonna pass on this. Personal reasons.

Everyone else, fire away. No further questions directed to me, please.

Just some reflections. When I first read this, I didn't know what an annual was. It was published in our monthly Superman comic as a regular story - just longer. It filled most of the 52 pages that was standard at the time (no ads). I liked the story, enjoyed seeing Superman and Batman together again after the great set-up in MAN OF STEEL # 3.

I loved it but didn’t feel Giordano was the right inker over Art Adams.

Not much Giodano there. Dick invariably farmed out his assignments—as I learned after the fact on MAN OF STEEL. He actually inked only the third issue in its entirety.

Hard to wag the finger here, tho. In those days use of uncredited assistants was common practice—and returned to such during the explosion of rock star artists.

Until just now, I had no idea he had actually done MOS 3.
