JB has told us stories about "Jack the Hack" bs that was prevalent at Marvel in the '70s. Nonetheless he was dominant in covers for a period there. I am curious if anyone here knows what he was getting paid for covers in that period? And was he paid an appropriately "kingly" sum or the same as others?

Mark Evanier might be the person to contact for an answer on this one.

Evanier is a good idea to add to a search query. Thanks Rod.

Standard rates or pay ranges seem a little less intrusive that how much a specific artist was paid.

I would be more interested in seeing the numbers for how many covers Kirby did in comparison to Marvel's other top cover artists of the era (Romita, Kane, Cockrum, Wilson, Buckler, etc).  For a while it seemed Kirby was doing A LOT of covers.

Not trying to be rude. It seems like page rates and things are somewhat open info. I was just curious whether the cover gigs were fairly compensating him or if it was more of the same.

Jim Shooter and I had a short conversation about Kirby's 1970s covers. It has been a few years since the conversation, but Mr. Shooter seemed quite proud of the covers and his involvement in the arrangement with Jack Kirby.

It's worth noting that the 70s covers Jack drew for books on which he wasn't doing the interiors were all based on sketches/layouts produced by other artists.  I posted some examples in this old thread.
