He’s the bad guy in a comic book. Of course he gets defeated.

A little too on the nose as a villain, I suspect.
Sort of like the umpteenth early Spider-Man villain being based on a member of the animal kingdom: The Vulture, The Tarantula, The Rhino, The Lizard, The Scorpion, okay we get it ... :)

One thing is that I never understood why he called himself the Leader.
He doesn't "lead" anything. He built an army of rubber soldiers to fight the Hulk, but for most of his history, he's been an army of one, just him and his gadgets.
Maybe the movie will make some sense of his villain name but he might as well have called himself The Genius. I mean, nobody's used that name yet, have they? It would have the virtue of being true.

He fancies himself the leader of all of us.

Only we know what we see looking in the mirror. I guess if Sam Sterns sees a guy who's pulling strings and "leading" the world--whether anyone knows it or not--well, that's his prerogative.

He's one of my favorite villains, maybe because he is a little over the top. I
would love to see a meeting between him and Reed Richards.

Remembering Roger Stern’s response to the dumbed down Spider-Man stories in SPIDEY SUPER STORIES. He said he wanted to counter with SPIDEY INTELLECTUAL STORIES, where Spider-Man and his villains would resort to discourse rather than punching and hitting.

Andrew: Question is: given he might be the smartest man on Earth in Marvel--even beating Reed and Doom--what has kept him from being a world-class threat? Is it his fixation on the Hulk? Is it that he lacks the imagination or ambition?

==

I think that's exactly it. Intelligence is one thing. Ambition, attention to detail, hustle, emotional stability, ego, etc, all factor in.

One of my favorite bits to address this was what JB did in Alpha Flight with Smart Alec. When Delphine Courtney recruits him, this genius is muddling away his time at the local mall, playing chess exhbition matches.  (In real life as well, the most intelligent among us are often not the most successful).

Apart from "Ground Zero", have there been that many memorable / great Leader stories?

In terms of characters / villains like Doctor Doom, Lex Luthor, The Joker and The Kingpin (to name a few), they all have great stories they have appeared in.

I thought it would be interesting if they did a story where the Leader and Mad Thinker met, and decided to switch foes.

Though I suspect the FF would defeat the Leader faster than the Hulk would.
