Some personal favorites

Gil Kane/Wally Wood, Dan Adkins or John Romita
John Buscema/Tom Palmer, Sal Buscema or George Klein
Gene Colan/Tom Palmer or Syd Shores
Sal Buscema/Sam Grainger or Klaus Janson
Jack Kirby/Joe Sinnott or Bill Everett
Neal Adams/Dick Giordano or Tom Palmer
Herb Trimpe/John Severin

The EC guys - Wood and Severin - looked good no matter what they were working on.

Unrelated shout out to Wood for designing the classic red-suited Daredevil, Power Girl, and the THUNDER Agents!  Some of the all-time best!

On the letters page of All-Star #60 it says Power Girl was designed by Joe Orlando, and Amazing World of DC #6 features Orlando's original sketch of the character.  That sketch appears here, mis-credited to Ric Estrada (even though it clearly says in AWODCC #6 that Orlando drew it).  In this interview, Gerry Conway says that Orlando's design was based on a "crude sketch" that he drew, and he takes credit for her cutaway chest circle "emblem."

I usually have a cardinal rule that artists are their own best inkers, with JB, Simonson and Perez being my prime examples.

But I am almost ashamed to say that I recently found the exception to the rule in Alan Davis. He's been inking himself the past few years, and it's still beautiful work, but I find it lacking a certain depth that Mark Farmer was adding to his pencils.

Agreed. When Davis inks himself, it “feels” like a less sure Paul Neary did it. Still beautiful!

Surprised no one has mentioned Klaus Janson inking Frank Miller.

Frank Miller and Klaus Janson certainly deserve praise… and I also want to mention Klaus Janson inking Gil Kane was amazing! Probably the best inker Kane has been paired with after Romita.

I loved the pairing of Sal Buscema and Klaus Janson!  It's one of those magical things that could only happen in super-hero comics!  I was glad to read that Sal also loved it every time Janson inked him.

Klaus Janson was also Rich Buckler's best inker.

Rich Buckler was inked by Klaus Janson? Interesting.

Honestly, Klaus Janson inked Carmine Infantino and I was impressed by the results... he really worked well with a variety of artists.

Janson inked Buckler on Deathlok in Astonishing Tales.

When I was a kid in the secon half of the 70's there was a trio of inkers I recognized and loved right away - Tom Palmer, Klaus Janson and Joe Sinnott.

As for Sal Buscema, Janson was also a favorite along with Joe Staton, Ernie Chan and Dave Hunt.

Charles -

I would agree that Romita and Janson were great inkers for Kane, but I'd also include Dan Adkins, Sid Greene and Wally Wood on the list.

"What's some favorite penciler/inker collaboration where the inker really made it special for you?"

...

I agree with every pairing above that I've seen. I'll add some that were pleasant changes or just plain old one off's that really grabbed at the time they appeared.

Pablo Marcos over George Perez  Avengers #154. Perez went thru some pairings prior to that issue that were less than ideal. What an impression that duo made on me starting right there #154.

Pat Broderick and Bruce Patterson starting at Captain Marvel #59. Broderick had a couple other inkers the few issues he had been there but I thought Patterson really worked with the space drama stories. Sadly it only lasted 4 issues before the title was canceled.

Klaus Jansen over Sal Buscema Daredevil #140. One of my all-time favorite "battle" issues. Jansen pops in to ink a single DD issue since the year before and wont ink another till the following year. Pleasant surprise! (these 2 are also my favorite Defenders duo)

Rudy Nebres over Jim Starlin Dr. Strange #23. I wish that could've went on.

Steve Leialoha inking Carmine Infantino Nova #22. I think Carmine had the entire Marvel staff inking him on his Nova run.

Dave Hunt over John Byrne. That Tigra MTU issue is just incredible, I must've went thru those pages dozens of times the first few days after buying it. Left an everlasting impression on me.

Keith Pollard and Chic Stone- Thor. Pollard was doing a bunch of titles around this time but I like him with Stone the most. Thor #286-300

Joe Giella over Joe Staton on the last 2 issues of All-Star Comics. I love Layton on Staton before those issues but it was a pleasant surprise to Staton getting the smooth as silk treatment from Giella.

Wonder how a Janson/ Sienkiewicz collaboration would look.

Janson inked a handful of issues of the first Moon Knight series, back when Sienkiewicz was in "Neal Adams mode"
