One of my occasional problems with TOS STAR TREK is the sometimes inappropriate “chuckle line” at the end of some episodes. Whole star systems get wiped out—but they end with a chuckle. Kirk’s brother and family die—end with a chuckle.

Something of the time, I suppose. Didn’t bother me first run.

I do think also that ending a drama with some humor was of that era. That's why the last line in "City on the Edge of Forever" was so jarringly unexpected.

But modern films, especially disaster movies, still seem to do this.
I get that they are ‘empathise with the human struggle’, but completely at
the expense of ‘feel for those people who lost their lives’.
The hero dodged the building that wiped out thousands - yay!

I agree that is troubling if you sit and think about it,
and it happens in many films and tv shows. It's especially
troubling when a team member or cast character dies and the
next week they're back to normal, no long term grief etc.
As with a lot of entertainment it's best not to overthink
these things.
