Crashed the Jag yesterday. No one hurt. Barely a scratch on the other car.

Bad news of the day: for a car as old as the Jag most of the parts have been long since discontinued. The repair guy is going to investigate finding them second hand--expensive--but he says if I was going through my insurance (I'm not) they would write it off as totaled.

I do not want to give up this car!

Oof, I feel your pain. I'm trying to hold onto my '09 Benz like cold death, and have been very reluctant to let the wife and stepkids touch it - mostly because I hate how the newer models look and feel! I've already decided that if the engine goes I'll probably pay to have a replacement put in.

I've had great success finding parts on Ebay, dunno if that's a viable path for your model, though.

I've read that industry data shows that about 1 in 4 (nearly 23% to 27%) of collision claims now result in a total loss, as declared by insurance companies.

That’s why I don’t want to go through my insurance company on this.

Glad no one was hurt, the rest is just metal, and can be repaired, albeit at a
cost.

Modern cars get written off really easily.
If your air bag goes off, you’re pretty much going to get a write off.

My previous car was written off after someone failed to stop at a
roundabout (something becoming more common nowadays).
I’d had the car about 5 years, and in that time it only lost a third of its value
which shocked me. Covid really did a number on the second hand car
market as the supply of new cars dried up.
I have a friend who had his car for three years and got a part exchange deal
where he got more money than he’d paid for the car.

Hope you can get yours repaired JB

Horrible news JB... hopefully the recent financial success helps offset this unexpected expense.

Maybe Abrams can send the check right to the body shop, and then you're nonethewiser that you earned and spent any money at all, until tax time that is ;)

Take care JB and condolences on the damage to the Jag. Glad to hear you are physically okay!

My son had a freak accident where his '15 GTI slipped out of gear and hit a tree.  The body shop asked if I had a problem replacing the collision bar under the front under the front bumper skin with used one since they could not find a new one.  The difference in price between new and used for that one part was the deciding factor in totaling the vehicle.

Perhaps purchasing a totaled Jag that was hit on the opposite end than yours was?  May be a great way to get a lot of good parts quickly.

Glad to know you are OK, JB - anything can be managed as
long as you can walk away from an accident.
