My feelings on the death penalty seem to seesaw over the years. Let them serve out a life sentence and be haunted by their crimes every night as they try to sleep or the death penalty and give the family of the deceased closure .
The problem with the former is that there will of course will be the unrepentant, and the latter rarely happens "swiftly" and the cases of wrongful convictions.
As for the death penalty being a deterrent? According to the Death Penalty Information Center death penalty states average 4.7 murders per 100,000 residents while non-death penalty states average 3.8.
