I was barely out of high school when the 90's boom got going and got caught up in it a little, similar to Trevor, my finances didn't allow me too much over-exposure!
It all crystalized for me when one of the Shadowhawk books had a 1:100 variant and a guy I knew who dealt comics on the side bought in - 100 copies of 1 issue to get the gold or silver variant, or whatever it was.
I went to my first Chicago Con a couple weeks later and Image was selling those same variants for $5 each, no strings.
